Successful Intelligence

Why is this Important

Our research involving more than 400 instructors established that poor student motivation is one of the biggest challenges you face in this course--and we were certain that the Successful Intelligence theme could help you address it. Ninety-five percent of our reviewers, class testers and focus group participants agreed: Our innovative, text-wide theme of Successful Intelligence will motivate students. It will also help students achieve more than if they used standard study methods based on analytical skills alone.

What is Successful Intelligence?

The concept of Successful Intelligence is based on the idea that analytical, creative, and practical thinking skills are not fixed. More than that, this framework moves individual students from self-awareness to action as they integrate and apply analytical, creative, and practical thinking skills.

-Analytical intelligence, often referred to as critical thinking, is the ability to assess, analyze, compare, and evaluate information.

-Creative intelligence is the ability to innovate--to generate and defend ideas, shift perspective, take risks, and think oustide the box.

-Practical intelligence is the ability to understand and manage yourself, understand others, implement ideas, and find ways to adapt to or change your environment.

This A-C-P approach has been proven to improve student achievement across age, gender, socioeconomic status, and culture. Students learn that they are more than their test scores. They learn more about who they are as thinkers and how they learn. They build creative and practical skils in concert with analytical skills dicovering how to balance these skills to reach goals more successfully than if they'd used one skill alone.
