Key's learning styles coverage gives students tools to help them "learn to learn" in any situation. Research has indicated that professors want to do more than merely make students aware of their learing preferences. When they teach about learning styles, they also want to teach students to use what they learn. Keys' coverage does exactly that. The vast majority of our focus group participants examined Keys to Success in depth and rted our learning styles coverage as a significant comparative advantage, noting that it fosters "student responsibility for learning." In fact, among participating instructors who used competing texts (such as Ellis, Gardner, and Santrock), nearly all (92%) preferred the Keys coverage of this topic.
What is the Keys Difference?
Keys to Success focuses on two approaches to answer the question of how students lear:
-Multiple Pathways to Learning, based on Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences theory. This approach assesses potential and strength in eight areas of ability. Everyone has some level of ability in each of the intelligences. -The Personality Spectrum, based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. This approach helps students understand how they respond to the world around them, including people, events, and information. Helping students become aware of learning preferences isn't enough, however. Keys demonstrates--in chapter 3 and throughout--how students' learning preferences relate to every subject and live skill.
